The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is in the process of developing the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), which is scheduled for completion in September 2014. Working Group III has openings for volunteer chapter scientists. We seek for highly motivated individuals to support author teams with technical aspects of chapter development. This may include fact checking, reference checking, confirming the completeness of responses to reviewer comments, and assisting with figures and tables. The positions will allow volunteers the opportunity to get involved in the IPCC process and to help ensure the quality and robustness of an important IPCC product.
Volunteer chapter scientists will not be compensated and will not be employees of the IPCC, Working Group III, or the agencies that support or host Working Group III. The Working Group III Technical Support Unit will supervise the successful applicants, who will work from their home institutions. Successful applicants will need to demonstrate that they can commit at least 33% of their time for a minimum of one year between Spring 2012 and late Spring 2014.
Applicants must have a Ph.D., master’s degree, or ongoing study toward a Ph.D. or master’s degree in a subject related to climate change mitigation. Relevant subjects include economics, political science, sociology, civil or environmental engineering, spatial planning, business and finance, political science among others. To support the training of the next generation of assessment scientists, preference will be given to graduate students and recent graduates.
Volunteer chapter scientists will be assigned to one of the Working Group III chapters, and may also assist Coordinating Lead Authors in ensuring consistency and coherence across a group of chapters. The successful applicants will work under the general rules and procedures of the IPCC. Selected individuals may be invited to participate in author teleconferences or meetings.
